As the hit TV series Outlander takes a break from our screens, passionate fans are revisiting earlier seasons to get their fix.

Even though Jamie Fraser, portrayed by Sam Heughan, and his 20th-century love Claire, played by Caitríona Balfe, embody the quintessential star-crossed lovers, there remained one sensitive subject Claire found difficult to broach with her Scottish warrior beau - her prior marriage to Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies).

While caught between timelines after her unplanned journey through the standing stones, Claire's reticence to open up about Frank to Jamie, whom she married in the past, is striking.

Shedding light on this emotional barrier in a discussion on the Outlander podcast were show executive producers Ronald D. Moore and Toni Graphia.

They dissected the emotional chasm regarding Frank that exists between Jamie and Claire, noting Claire's surprising heart-to-heart with Master Raymond (Dominique Pinon) in the show's second season, reports the Scottish Daily Express.

Graphia remarked on the paradox of Claire having no one to confide in about Frank, particularly not Jamie, despite his knowledge of him, explaining, "Claire, ironically, there's not anyone she can talk to really about Frank, especially Jamie. Even though Jamie knows about Frank, she's worried about him."

Highlighting the importance of acknowledging Claire's past affection for Frank, Graphia articulated, "We felt it was important to show she loved Frank once, she's concerned about him."

She commended the pivotal role Master Raymond plays as Claire's unsuspecting confidant, saying, "He's on her mind and Master Raymond becomes her confidant, and I love that when she starts to talk to Master Raymond about him, it builds a friendship between them."

Moore chimed in, adding an intriguing revelation about the storyline, noting, "I don't think this was in the book."

According to Graphia: "No, actually this was your idea. I had in the first draft he read her astrological chart, which actually made no sense because she wasn't born in the year that she tells him she's born in.

"He gleaned there was something off about her because she lied and it doesn't add up."

Graphia referenced the scene where Claire confronts Master Raymond following her poisoning, seeking to uncover the identity of the perpetrator.

During her visit to the apothecary, Claire also confided in Master Raymond about her concerns regarding Frank and inquired about her first husband's well-being.

In a surprising turn of events, Master Raymond assured Claire that she would reunite with Frank in the future, a prediction that came to fruition in the season two premiere when Claire returned to Frank in the 20th century.

Graphia described the apothecary scene as a "nice Easter egg" for fans, foreshadowing Claire and Frank's eventual reunion.

The bond between Claire and Master Raymond strengthened after he gifted her a necklace that would change colour in the presence of poison.

Additionally, he saved her life following a miscarriage and her subsequent brush with death, and Claire later reciprocated by rescuing him from the king's sorcery charges.
